CHAPTER 14

I led us into Barti Ddu Pub. One of the servers had taken over Rachel’s spot as hostess. I scanned the dining room, then waved her off. Instead of a table to ourselves, I headed towards a familiar face sitting between windows at the front wall.

“Dining alone?” I asked. Rhodri looked up from the folded newspaper he was reading and pulled the pipe from his mouth. A broad smile greeted us as he stood and used his pipe to motion towards the table. “Always room for delightful company, my dear. Let me enlarge the table for four.”

“Five if you can,” I said, tilting my head towards the front door. “Punkin will be along in a moment or two.”

“With the pleasant company, a wart or two must be tolerated.” He chuckled and tapped the crystal set in the centre of the small table. It magically enlarged to seat five. Barti’s new hostess hurried over with a couple more chairs and passed around menus.

“I’m always impressed by the enlargement and reducing spells,” Rhodri said, settling back into his chair. “Permanence on such spells takes advanced magic. And a bit of talent. Shapeshifters seem to excel at such.”

“Don’t ask Logan to do any of that,” I said with a laugh. “He asks Ace to mend his clothes after every full moon.”

“Ah. He is more the brute in brute strength, then.” Rhodri held his pipe over his breast pocket. Alfie’s hand grabbed it and pulled it into the coat. “Please. I forget my manners. Take a seat and I’ll get us a round of drinks. Tea is past, so what can I get for you, lasses?”

“Rhodri, introductions first.” I waved open palmed towards Gigi. “This is Miss Ponte from Italy. Gigi, this is Lieutenant Colonel Rhodri Reece, Commander of Her Grace’s Kings Company.”

“A delight to make your acquaintance, my dear Miss Ponte.” Rhodri took her extended hand and raised it to his lips.

“Gigi, please, Colonel Reece.”

“Then I am Rhodri.” He smiled and turned towards Sammi.

“This is Sammi Cupertino of Erie Falls, Ontario,” I said, watching Rhodri. His eyes lit up. “Miss Cupertino. A pleasure. Please give my regards to your grandfather. Delightful chap. He and I worked together to recover the Count of Prussia’s slippers.”

“Oh. Grandfather mentioned those several times. Wasn’t that for Frederick the Great?”

“It was, my dear. Seems old Freddy was getting airs after winning a few battles and wanted slippers for his feet at night. Not just any slippers. He’d heard of a pair the grandmaster of the Teutonic Order of Knights had commissioned from the fae. Fellow was half fae and used his connections to get a pair that always warmed up magically whenever he wore them. Both he and Freddy had poor circulation and liked to have warm feet.”

“Weren’t they stolen by a vampire lord?” Sammi shivered. “I have only met one vampire. She says Lord Neirin has a nasty reputation.”

“He’s actually quite charming. You should meet him. And you were just up at Castle Raven, but missed your chance.
